What to expect at the Nederburg Auction 2015
One of the highlights of the Cape Winelands’ social calendar is undoubtedly the annual Nederburg Auction. This year, the auction will be held from 11-12 September at the Nederburg Estate in Paarl. Here’s what to expect from this year’s catalogue.
This year, auction manager, Dalene Steyn, wanted to present vintages that prove that South African wine can indeed age and age well. Seeing as our country is still a novice in terms of winemaking, only the best and most classic vintages have been selected. The vintages are mostly from the sixties and seventies, a simpler period of winemaking. By selecting these, Steyn believes they provide the backbone of the wines of the future, tying in with this year’s theme: “Beyond.”
A vast array of ages
This year will feature wines that vary between extremely young and quite mature in the selection of Private Bin wins sold exclusively at the auction. These include sweet wines approaching 40 years, a 12-year-old Semillon and some reds made just five years ago, making them perfect for aging. The Private Bin wines are seen as significant investments for wine aficionados, proven by the rise in the value of Private Bin wines from previous auctions. This includes the 1970 Edelkeur, which in 2009 fetched R3500 a case, R5000 in 2012 and set a record at R29 000 in 2014.
The return of great vintages
For fans of the Edelkeur, this year’s auction sees the inclusion of the 2007 and the 2005 reserves, the latter of which went for R3800 a case in 2013. Both of these are muti-gold medallist wines made by resident Nederburg winemaker, Razvan Macici. Macici’s 2009 Eminence, a flagship dessert wine in this year’s catalogue, received top honours at the 2011 Five Nations Wine Challenge in Sydney. The 2008 Eminence is featured as well this year, earning 96 points and winning the trophy for the best unfortified dessert wine at the 2011 Old Mutual Trophy Wine Show. The 2008 Eminence was one of the top ten wines in the 2011 Muscats du Monde in France.
